Something about summer just makes us want to sit at quaint sidewalk cafes and people watch while we sip rose. Looking to stay out of this heat? Join the folks in folk-costumes at Seattle Center for music, dancing, a beer garden, sausages galore and a pierogi eating contest for the brave.
Why you should make it? The pierogi eating contest, of course.
When the traffic slow’s down because the glare is too bright, sunglass sales start to top any other city’s (check #23), the Blue Angels start to practice routines louder and lower over lakefront neighborhoods, West Seattle’s Alki Beach crowds could fool you into thinking you’ve landed on Muscle Beach, the stream of tourists posing under Pike Place’s Starbucks are wearing cruise lanyards, people that have craved the heat for the last 9 months start to complain about it, you’re hard pressed to find a patch of grass at Madison Park beach, Duck Dodge seems to take up all of Lake Union, Westward & Little Gull runs out of Rosé on the deck and white legs and manicured toes sprout like spring flowers…we know the sun has landed in Seattle for a little while.
Summer chimed in earlier than usual this year (normally we don’t rely on Seattle to offer us much more than a teaser day or two before July 15th) but this year it is in full swing and laying the heat on thick. A ten day forecast of temperatures reaching a near 90 degrees means we’ll all be seeking a little evening breeze. We fished through our listings for some of our best outdoor retreats to give you a taste of what summer nights in some Bennion & Deville homes might play out like.
In a fantastically exciting, and unexpected World Cup to date, the United States 2014 team have stood “toe-to-toe with some big teams” as U.S. goalie Tim Howard put it, to advance to the knockout round of the World Cup to play Belgium today, July 1st at 1PM PST. For the rapidly growing U.S. fan club (19 million viewers tuned in last week to watch U.S. vs. Germany) in Seattle, we’re throwing out a handful of suggestions on where to catch the game as office work grinds to a screeching halt for the next two nail-biting hours.
Fado Irish Pub at 801 1st Ave S (That is, if you can elbow your way through the crowds in either of these two tried and tested stomping grounds for the sports-crazed that have likely been posted up for hours at this point.)
Madison Park’s Attic Alehouse – Post-match victory swim in the lake at Madison Park beach, anyone? They have also rigged a TV on their patio so you can catch some of these mid-summer rays while you cheer on our boys.
Phinney Neighborhood Association’s Phinney Center has rigged a 14-by-8 movie screen for this momentous occasion. Rumor has it there will be food trucks.
Cafe Presse – Not feeling like pub grub? Venture to Captiol Hill’s French bar and café, Café Presse that was included in the Flipkey.com / Trip Advisor list or “10 Best Sports Bars in the U.S. to watch the World Cup” for your fix of FIFA and steak-frites.
Stuck at your desk? Watch the game on the ESPN website or download the “Watch ESPN” app.
