When the traffic slow’s down because the glare is too bright, sunglass sales start to top any other city’s (check #23), the Blue Angels start to practice routines louder and lower over lakefront neighborhoods, West Seattle’s Alki Beach crowds could fool you into thinking you’ve landed on Muscle Beach, the stream of tourists posing under Pike Place’s Starbucks are wearing cruise lanyards, people that have craved the heat for the last 9 months start to complain about it, you’re hard pressed to find a patch of grass at Madison Park beach, Duck Dodge seems to take up all of Lake Union, Westward & Little Gull runs out of Rosé on the deck and white legs and manicured toes sprout like spring flowers…we know the sun has landed in Seattle for a little while.
Summer chimed in earlier than usual this year (normally we don’t rely on Seattle to offer us much more than a teaser day or two before July 15th) but this year it is in full swing and laying the heat on thick. A ten day forecast of temperatures reaching a near 90 degrees means we’ll all be seeking a little evening breeze. We fished through our listings for some of our best outdoor retreats to give you a taste of what summer nights in some Bennion & Deville homes might play out like.

We are thrilled to blog about our newest Bennion & Deville listing, a fabulous 1911-built home thats situated on an expansive corner lot in Mount Baker – the kind of place, reported The Seattle Times, “where a few neighbors hire a band, strap on their tool belts and erect a stage in the park to provide free concerts for the neighborhood. Where people get together to fight City Hall or to dog a major petroleum company over a contaminated site. Where the community club hosts a neighborhood potluck for 300 and a biennial Home Tour requiring 150 volunteers — and also raises around $100,000 a year in college scholarships.”

From its hillside perch above Lake Washington, the magnificent 2-story house enjoys commanding views of the water, Cascade Mountains, and Mt. Rainier. A terraced front yard with mature plantains, a circular drive, koi pond and fountain provide a lovely approach to the house. The foyer and formals are all grand in scale and graced with oak panel walls, high ceilings, hardwood floors and other period detailing. Multiple sets of front doors in the living room open to a full-width deck that provides breathtaking vistas and front-row seats to Seafair festivities.
The main home has 6 bedrooms, all located on the second level as well as 3 flu baths. Large master suite has spectacular views and adjoining sitting room or office.
The lower level of the house is dedicated to serious play and includes a media/billiards room, a dance studio, a music/game room, an exercise room and a media room.
A detached 2-car garage and full carriage house apartment complete this grand estate.
On a walk through the stunning Washington Park Arboretum at dusk this weekend we snapped this beautifully ominous shot of Lake Washington with the University of Washington’s Husky Stadium in the distance. To get this view, take the Foster Island Trail – a 2 mile loop and a spectacular walk on a sunny day or evening.
This architectural book was published in 1974 so our assumption is that this photo must be at least 40 years old. It’s clear that this residence looks much the same as it did all those years ago, improved only by the addition of a spa with a mosaic glass wall tucked just under the round arch beneath the expanded stone terrace. It’s always wonderful to see an architecturally significant and historic home like this so beautifully preserved with updates that show ingenuity and thought.
